The World Health Organization provides 10 recommendations for individuals to protect themselves against the novel coronavirus.

On February 28, at a regular press conference, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus introduced 10 basic personal preventive measures against the novel coronavirus, including regularly cleaning hands and surfaces of objects, and avoiding travel when experiencing fever or cough. Speaking at the press conference that day, Tedros emphasized, “Stopping the epidemic starts with you.” The WHO provided 10 basic personal preventive measures against the novel coronavirus. First, regularly wash your hands with alcohol-based hand sanitizers or with soap and water. Touching your face after your hands have come into contact with contaminated surfaces or patients is one of the ways the virus spreads; therefore, keeping your hands clean can reduce the risk of viral transmission. Second, regularly disinfect surfaces of objects, such as kitchen tables and chairs, office desks, and other frequently touched areas. Third, educate yourself about COVID-19-related knowledge, but make sure the information comes from reliable sources, such as local or national public health agencies, the WHO website, or local healthcare professionals. For most people, the initial symptoms of COVID-19 infection are fever and dry cough, rather than runny nose. Most infected individuals experience mild symptoms and can recover without any special medical care. Fourth, avoid traveling when you have a fever or cough. If you become ill during a flight, immediately notify the cabin crew. Upon returning home, promptly contact medical personnel and inform them of your travel history. Fifth, cover your mouth and nose with your sleeve or a tissue when coughing or sneezing. Dispose of used tissues immediately in a closed trash bin, then wash your hands. Sixth, individuals aged 60 or older, or those with underlying conditions such as cardiovascular disease, respiratory illness, or diabetes, may be at higher risk of developing severe illness if infected with the novel coronavirus. Such individuals should take extra precautions, such as avoiding crowded places or locations where they might come into contact with sick people. Seventh, if you feel unwell, stay at home and call your doctor or local healthcare provider. They will ask about your symptoms, where you’ve been, and who you’ve been in contact with. This will help you receive appropriate advice or guidance on where to go for medical care, and it can also prevent you from infecting others. Eighth, when you’re sick, stay at home, eat and sleep separately from family members, and use separate utensils. Ninth, if you experience shortness of breath, seek medical attention immediately. Tenth, feeling anxious during an epidemic is normal and understandable—especially if you live in a country or community affected by the outbreak. Learn about the epidemic prevention and control measures in your community, and discuss how to ensure safety at workplaces, schools, and other settings.

To nourish the lungs and prevent illness in spring, you need to eat the right foods.

The symptoms of influenza are primarily systemic, including high fever, chills, shivering, headache, generalized muscle aches, extreme fatigue, and loss of appetite. Mild respiratory symptoms such as cough and sore throat may also accompany these systemic symptoms. Both COVID-19 and influenza share the characteristics of high infectivity and rapid transmission. Due to the similarity of early symptoms, hospitals need to set up fever clinics for screening and diagnosis. The key differences lie in the fact that the incubation period for influenza typically does not exceed 7 days, with more severe systemic symptoms and milder respiratory symptoms; in contrast, the COVID-19 virus is more insidious, with a longer incubation period and usually targeting the lungs as its primary organ. A prominent symptom is sudden and severe shortness of breath and difficulty breathing, accompanied quickly by pulmonary symptoms. Influenza occurs every year, whereas COVID-19 has broken out during a specific period this year, with a clear epidemiological history of exposure and an identifiable incubation period. Some people feel anxious about their own or their family members’ persistent coughs. Lin Lin says that if your symptoms have already lasted for more than three months, and you haven’t traveled to any epidemic areas or been in contact with anyone from those areas, it’s highly unlikely that you’ve contracted the virus—so there’s no need to worry excessively. Since these are infections caused by different types of viruses, they can be distinguished through viral nucleic acid testing. If you’re really worried, you can go to the hospital for a nucleic acid test if possible. However, during this special period, if you have no history of exposure, it’s still advisable to minimize visits to the hospital as much as possible.
